The timing for testing and diagnostics depends on the specific infection, as different sexually transmitted infections (STIs) require different periods of time before they can be reliably detected in a test:
HIV: An HIV test is usually reliable about 6 weeks after a potential risk exposure. A rapid test (from capillary blood) is considered reliable after around 12 weeks.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: These can usually be tested for after 1 to 2 weeks.
Syphilis: Testing for syphilis is advisable around 2 to 4 weeks after contact.
Hepatitis B and C: These can be tested for after approximately 1 to 4 months.
If you have symptoms, testing at an earlier stage may also be appropriate.
Tests carried out too early can produce false results. During our consultation, we ask about these details and put together the appropriate tests on an individual basis.
